Freshly milled grain is the only path to healthy baking

If you are health concious and love to bake, well, you have a problem. To bake nourishing real food, you need to bake with nourishing real grain. If you are serious about healthy eating, then you already know that industrial white flour is not simply “not as healthy”, but that it is the very worst kind of industrial junk food (maybe worse than you even imagine). It’s actually anti-nourishing.

So here’s the problem: It is difficult to impossible to buy “healthy” flour. The big supermarkets stock “healthy” alternatives with labels like “100% Whole Wheat”, “Muti-Grain”, “Seven-Grain” etc. But, almost unbelievably, the base for all this flour is the same white industrial junk. Why do they do this? First, because real “whole meal” flour doesn’t keep. And second, because it still gives home bakers the fluffy results they like while providing the perception of healthy.

If you actually want to bake healthy, your main ingredient—flour—must be healthy. You need to use real stone-ground “whole meal” flour. And, it needs to be fresh. Or it won’t taste good and won’t be healthful either. So what to do?

You’ll need to find that very rare specialty store that mills their own or takes great care to keep fresh flour. Sometimes you can find a good supplier at a local farmers’ market. A new option now, of course, is to buy GRAINSTORM fresh-ground baking mixes. And finally, if you want complete control and the most economical long-term solution, you can mill your own.

Not as hard-core as it sounds.

Especially if you opt for an electric mill, you can have a batch of beautiful fresh flour ready by the time you get out your baking gear. And with a good mill, it is neat and easy to do.

We started offering mills for sale because we got so many comments on the demonstration mill that we use at the farmers’ markets and store demos. There is a lot of interest building as people get more savvy about the travesty of modern wheat flour and look for alternatives to the industrial food chain.

If you like the idea of milling your own flour, we can’t encourage you enough. You will be thrilled with the results. Check out our beautiful German-made home grain mills
